When his Citibank colleague Aditya Puri joined HDFC Bank at inception in 1994, Piyush Gupta nearly took the plunge but decided to stay on, eventually rising to become the CEO of the US-based lender’s Southeast Asia operations covering nine countries as well as Australia and New Zealand.
